Living History
Through grant-making endeavors, we support cultural and historical initiatives with living history projects. Whether historical reenactments, scripted historical theater, or improvised inter active impersonation, MHC’s goal is to help our partners across Missouri bring history to life. We also have put together materials to help local communities create their own Chautauqua style programs, including a National Directory of Chautauqua Performers and other “how-to” information.
Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Healthcare
This national award-winning, scholar-led humanities reading and discussion program is for health care professionals. The program invites people working in the medical field to connect the worlds of science and lived experience, providing participants an opportunity to reflect on their professional roles and relationships through plays, short stories, poetry, fiction and personal narratives in a setting where they can share their reflections with colleagues. Literature & Medicine was developed at the Maine Humanities Council. Their Literature & Medicine page provides full details about the program. For information about how to start a Literature & Medicine program in your Missouri community, please contact Patricia Zahn at the Missouri Humanities Council.
ReadMOre
Missouri’s ReadMOre is a “one book, one community” project. It engages readers, libraries, schools, private book clubs, booksellers and others in focusing their attention on a single compelling piece of literature each year.
Readers then have opportunities to attend or host book discussions and participate in creative activities connected to the book, author, or related stories. Discussions and associated programs are hosted across the state by libraries, schools, homes and other organizations.
Grants
The Missouri Humanities Council awards grants in support of locally generated projects or programs. The Council is especially interested in activities that help humanities institutions improve their programming and interpretive practices. We are also very interested in institutes and conferences for teachers.
