In 2004 the book was Mississippi Solo by Eddy L. Harris. Published in 1988 and brought back into print at the request of Missouri librarians, this wonderful book is a black man's account of a solo canoe trip down the entire length of the Mississippi River. At age 30, the St. Louisan set out "to find out what I was made of."
In 2003 ReadMOre sponsored statewide discussions of Enemy Women by Missouri native, Paulette Jiles. Set in southeast Missouri during the Civil War, the fictional tale centers on the experiences of a teenage girl, Adair Colley, who is denounced as disloyal to the Union and sent to a women's prison in St. Louis.
In 2002 the librarians selected Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. Published in 1973, the book tells the story of a Japanese-American family who were uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar (California) internment camp in 1942.
