Cultural Heritage Development

This program line awards grants to help local institutions as they improve their methods of interpreting heritage and involving the public. Libraries, museums, historical societies, and similar organizations may find support for adult programming here.

Such institutions can become attractions and leaders in the booming business known as "cultural tourism." Cultural tourism becomes viable when a town's businesses and cultural organizations make a town's attractions easily accessible and discernable to visitors. The Missouri Humanities Council grants program is primarily for projects that improve the capacity of a town or its institutions to capture and sustain the interest of the public through history or literature.

We are especially interested in funding projects that implement ideas that have been generated from our annual theme, in relation to our touring exhibit, and in the design charettes that we conduct in partnership with the Missouri arts Council.

The Many Faces of Missouri

This program line demonstrates Missouri's traditions, stories, culture and broad ethnic heritage. It helps "us" understand people whose history and traditions differ from "ours." It is ideal for citizens who have called Missouri home for days or for generations. For newcomers and the agencies that help them become new citizens, this feature may help provide information about populations that once called Missouri "home" and that call it home today. For established residents, this program may help provide insights to the traditions, stories, and concerns of people who live within other religions or ways of life.

Multi-cultural perspectives and "Lewis and Clark" programming are among the main features of this new focus. The Council is especially interested in supporting programs that encourage mixed audiences and conversations among people of different heritage backgrounds.
