NUTS AND BOLTS

Although staff at the Black World History Museum continue to sponsor internships without resolving some of the program's logistical difficulties, they have still learned that improving structural capabilities would make for more successful future projects. In particular, the museum continues to face the challenges arising from conducting internship activities without having a designated space for this purpose. Because of the limited (usable) space the museum has to offer, museum staff worked with the interns in the galleries, hallway, office, exhibit space-anywhere the museum had a space available for that particular moment in that particular day. This variability posed obvious challenges to all participants. However, Executive Director Conley has learned to compensate for these difficulties by maximizing the resources available to her and the museum. She utilizes the museum's collection as an integral part of the interns' training while emphasizing off-site activities and "field trips" as equally essential elements of the program. So, while the interns do not have their own designated space at the museum, each area, both on and off site, acts as a learning workshop for the interns.
