Carolyn Gilman

Photo of Carolyn GilmanIn connection with her bicentennial exhibit work, Carolyn authored an exhibition catalog titled, Lewis and Clark: Across the Great Divide, that by its nature, and due to her spectacular skills, is able to reach beyond the scope of the museum exhibit.

As the Special Projects Historian at the Missouri Historical Society and project curator of Lewis and Clark: The National Bicentennial Exhibition, Carolyn Gilman spent seven years traveling all over the United States tracking the location of hundreds of artifacts, meeting with institutions and private collectors, establishing provenance and forming excellent relationships with many American Indian groups all along the Lewis and Clark trail. Her interpretation of the Lewis and Clark story is unusual in its multi-faceted presentation and includes a comprehensive look at what Lewis and Clark did not see: the world of women, different value systems, historical hindsight. The book also incorporates the many voices and difference perspectives of the native peoples that until this time have rarely been expressed and never appropriately disseminated.
