Missouri Humanities Council Board
Eric Zahnd, MHC Board Chair
Friends of the Missouri Humanities Council who receive Missouri Passages are often well aware of MHC’s programs, grants, and other activities. However, they may be unaware of MHC’s governance structure. As MHC’s current Board Chair, I am happy to give some insight behind the scenes of MHC’s governing body.
MHC is a non-profit organization created in 1971 by authorizing legislation of the U.S. Congress. MHC is one of 56 state and territorial humanities councils affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities. MHC is governed by a Board of Directors. Pursuant to federal law, six members of MHC’s board of directors are appointed by the Governor of Missouri; the remaining 18-24 members of the board are elected by the board to three year terms.
The Board sets the strategic course for MHC, maintains fiscal oversight, acts on grant requests, and oversees the work of our very capable Executive Director and staff.
The Board meets in person at least three times each year in different parts of the state. Our most recent meeting, in June, was in Hannibal. We will meet next in St. Louis. Our meetings are open to the public and meeting times and locations are available on our website.
Because the Board meets only every three to four months, much of the Board’s work is performed by various committees, including development, membership, government relations, grants, and a new committee working to develop an annual signature event.
On behalf of the entire Board, I invite anyone with interest in MHC activities to attend one of our meetings or let Executive Director Geoff Giglierano or I know of your interest in MHC.
