Smithsonian Institution

Since 1994, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) has partnered with state humanities councils nationwide to bring the wonders of the Smithsonian directly to people living in small rural towns throughout the country through a program called Museum on Main Street. Museum on Main Street combines the prestige of Smithsonian exhibitions, the program expertise of state humanities councils, and the remarkable volunteerism and unique histories of small rural towns to create transformative experiences in local communities.

Literature & Medicine

The Missouri Humanities Council has been working with the Maine Humanities Council to offer Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Health Care® at medical centers in MO since 2008. Created by the Maine Humanities Council, Literature & Medicine is a national award-winning, hospital-based, scholar-led humanities reading and discussion program for health care professionals that benefits both them and their patients.

The State Historical Society of Missouri a research facility and provider of public programs designed to share Missouri heritage. MHC has worked closely with them to support the Missouri History Speakers’ Bureau and National History Day in Missouri.

The National Endowment for the Humanities

The Missouri Humanities Council was founded in 1971 as an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. State humanities councils work in partnership with the NEH to extend humanities programs to local communities across the nation.
