Winter's Bone Discussion Guide

People who want to attend discussion groups for this year's statewide ReadMOre season, will have the pleasure of using an excellent discussion guide. It's the work of Kathleen Butterly Nigro, author of several other wonderful discussion guides and recipient of the University of Missouri -Saint Louis "Meritorious Service Award" 2005-2006. You can download the discussion guide from the ReadMOre web site at:

Call for Nominations for the Governor's Humanities Awards

Do you know of the work of an exemplary teacher? Do you know someone who has greatly expanded a historical society's effectiveness and outreach? Do you know someone who has expanded a community's or ethnic population's knowledge of its history? If so, I hope you will consider the criteria for nominating such a person for the 2007 Governor's Humanities Awards. There are several categories for the awards, and there are often multiple awards in each category. The Missouri Humanities Council depends on local people to bring people to our attention. Complete information is on our web site:

Book Review: America in 1857

We're moving toward a lot of statewide programming in connection with the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. E-Passages is happy to welcome this book review by Joan Musbach, President of the Missouri Council for History Education. The book makes a case for looking at 1857 as the year in which a war became inevitable.

Waverly's Call for Civil War Era Crafters and Reenactors

The small Missouri River town of Waverly is getting ready for a history festival on July 21-22. They've put out a call for people to participate in their festival, and I've attached a PDF version of their flyer on the link below.

Favorite Children's Books of Discussion Leaders

My colleague, Julie Douglas, says, "One of the most exciting aspects of READ from the START is the way our Discussion Leaders express their own love of books and stories and share their passion with the parents who attend the workshops.  If you have had the pleasure of attending a RFTS program or have met a Discussion Leader, you know what I mean. These are folks who love books and their enthusiasm in catching!  I have asked our RFTS Discussion Leaders to share a little about their own favorite children’s books and also a little about themselves.  Read on to meet just a few of the wonderful people who teach parents how to create interest around a book:

A Historical Musical about "Gumbo Bottoms"

Meredith Ludwig was doing a big oral history project along the Missouri River when her material began to "call her" to create a musical. Read Merdith's account of this personal Odyssey at the link below!

Recent Grant Awards

If you'd like to read thumbnail sketches about our program grant awards in 2007, I've summarized the activity on our grants page.

An Outsider View of the Civil War

Most of my family tree arrived in American during the Gilded Age, and the one strand that was here during the Civil War apparently did no soldiering. I grew up in a place that held no memories of battles or family hardships. Thus, I have an "outsider's" idea of the war when compared with the knowledge of many people I've met in Missouri. My essay is about that outsider view.
